Strollers vs Kings CC

Strollers win by 2 wickets

scorecard (to follow) The oppo's perspective

Back to Sunny Chiswick after a couple of unsuccessful games on the road and phew, what a scorcher it was, with the temperature up in the high 20’s (thats nearly 90 for your Americans). Kings provided the opposition and promised as usual, to be a stern test of Stroller’s resolve.
Having still not found the key to making Branko come down heads up, Illie called tails but then remembered he had taken the two headed yak coin from his pocket beforehand... So Strollers were asked to field in the baking sun.

Despite the hot conditions, Virk H came charging in to rattle the Kings' cages, and Lees, bowling metronimically, tested the same line and length, such that wickets seemed to fall at regular intervals. Virk accounted for the Kings dangerman early on with a cracking bouncing delivery which induced the edge, but Kings accumulated steadily, if unsuccessfully. Matthews Jnr came on for his spell, ably supported by Patel, back from his “rest”, and after some early tap, they both restricted the scoring rate whilst nibbling away at the wickets down total.

Dibbly Dobbly Krunic, not used to the hot weather (does the sun not shine in Serbia?) steamed in off one pace at the end of the innings and bowled his moon balls at the lower order Kings batters, who were struggling to hold their sides together when presented with the sight of the lanky grey haired ole bloke chucking pies at them. At the other end, Matthews Snr played the game properly, bending his back to deliver some snorting seamers, whilst also seeing one go back over his own head (takes some doing, that) for a huge six by the Kings tail ender.

Kings' final total of 170 would take some getting and most Strollers fielders were asking themselves in the tea break how they had allowed the oppo to score so heavily.

In strode Virk J and Paul, still with the name the wrong way around and also back after a “break”, to nibble away at the total.  Both seemed at ease, driving, pulling and nurdling the ball around and those hiding under the bench at the far end began to imagine a 10 wicket victory.

But Kings were indeed made of sterner stuff and just before the drinks break, Viks felt the heat and departed to an unwise shot, only to be followed soon after the break by Paul, again to a ball not worthy of the shot played against it. Virk H quickly joined the GD club but calm was brought to bear by Lollypop Lou and Moody, who started to erode the imposing score with ease.

Krunic though, feeling the heat and the dye washing off his hair, threw his wicket away and Matthews Snr struggled to the crease to join Moody.  Calm again ensued and the total came further down until Moody got one which stuck in the wicket, and then the hands of Mid On. Patel joined Virk H’s club, Lees temporarily held an end up but soon it was Matthews and Matthews at the crease with approximately 30 still to get.

Matthews Jnr heroicaly held on end up whilst the senior pro at the other end nibbled and thwacked into the total. Sensing the run rate rising uncomfortably, Matthews Snr took a dislike to the fayre offered up by the spinner, and proceeded to loft him for 2 sixes and a four (was a six really as was dropped over the line) in the same over to more or less wrap the game up.

At the other end, Matthews Jnr cleverly diverted a ball off his off stump to the boundary to seal victory, and Strollers had crept home. End result, Strollers won by 2 wickets, MoM was Matthews Snr and most importantly of all, a good game was had between two good sides, played in the right spirit throughout.
